St. John Basilica
According
to legend, St. John lived on this hill and was buried here
after his death. First a monument was built on the tomb
and in the 4th century A.D., a church with a wooden roof
was constructed around this monumental tomb, A hundred
years later, a domed basilica was built by Justinianus
(527-565), the ruins of which still stand. The structure,
which is cruciform in shape, is formed of a courtyard, a
narthex and a main structure with 5 naves. St. John s
grave is under the domed section in the middle. The sacred
dust, which is emitted from a hole in the grave, is
believed to have healing powers.
