Sirince Village
Sirince
village, which is 7 km from Seljuk, is a residential area
that provides easy daily access from the touristic sites
in the region. The road is 350 m. above sea and asphalt
level. The establishment of the village dates back to the
5th century A.D. Settlement in the village, which was
previously named Kirkmca-Qirkince I due to several
reasons. First of all, the village is protected from enemy
attacks due to the privilege of defense the mountains
surrounding it offer. Secondly, the people of Ephesus and
Ayasuluk were far from the threat of malaria; thirdly,
water was plentiful, the soil was fertile and the air was
fresh. In some sources, the establishment of the village
is dated back to the principality of Aydinogullari;
another legend has it that it was established in the
period of the Feudal Chiefs. The name 'Çirkince' (meaning
unbecoming) comes from the rumor that a group of people
from the Principality requested their Chief to emancipate
them so that they could settle in a place that they had
found. When the Chief asked them if the place was pretty,
they replied that it was unbecoming. The village which was
evacuated with the liberation of Izmir was settled by
Turkish families coming to the area in 1924 from Salonika
and its vicinity. Kazim Dirik Pasha, who was governor of
Izmir at the time, was greeted with the 'village march'
written by the village teacher Muallim Suat Bey upon his
arrival at Çirkince and with sentimentality, he demanded
that the name of the village be changed to Sirince
(meaning pretty and cute). The architectural design of the
village is different from other villages; all houses are
two-story stonework structures with many windows with
consistent sizes. The balconies are suspended and the
basements were used as kitchen and pantry. The window
sills and eaves were decorated with pictures and bird
patterns. There are two churches, a primary school with
special architectural features and a fountain (which has
been restored) and nearly forty monasteries. Tourism is
the main source of income in the village in recent years.
Thousands of Turkish and foreign tourists visit the place
at every month of the year and take photographs; they
enjoy the taste of the specially made Saç borek and the
home made wines. The village's apple cider is relished
because it is specially made at homes. The inhabitants of
the village also receive income from peaches, grapes and
apples.
